1 Health Corps promotes student wellness: Co-founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz and wife Lisa, Health Corps arrived on campus this past year with a bang, raising health awareness among students and staff.  Hayward High is one of the first schools in the Bary Area to receive this grant with the mission of promoting nutrition, fitness and mental resilience education. Our very own enthusiastic coordinator, Rose Marie Borillo, implemented a health fair, lunchtime demonstrations, staff wellness challenges, and a multitude of interactive classroom activities.
2 AP classes expand with the addition of three new AP courses (AP Statistics, AP Music Theory, AP Macroeconomics) a total of 11 AP courses are now available to HHS students.  AP Enrollment at HHS for next year has almost doubled, (179% increase).  HHS now offers more AP courses than the charter schools combined.  Strong recruitment efforts also result in significant enrollment increases of African-American students in AP English.
3 The PRIDE of Hayward High Music Program expands educational outreach to younger students in surrounding elementary schools.  When the elementary instrumental music program was cut, The PRIDE of Hayward High began its own Elementary Music Program in February of 2011. Approximately 75 elementary students in 3rd through 6th grades have participated.

Test scores increase for second year in a row as the three "Rs" (Rigor, Relevance, & Relationships), Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), standardized learning, collaboration and other school-wide measures result in higher test scores on California Standardized Tests.


5 Parent programs expand as new parent groups take flight with weekly activities, meetings and parent-support trainings.  The Parent/Community Center opens, CAFE participation among latino parents skyrockets, more than 30 parents graduate from a parent university program (PIQE), and our first African-American Parent Advisory Committee (AAPAC) debuts at HHS while planning to kick off next school year with a Welcome Back BBQ. as the three "Rs" (rigor, relevance, & relationships), Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), standardized learning, collaboration and other school-wide measures result in higher test scores on California Standardized Tests.
6 Seniors graduate with honors as the 120th graduating class receives its Hayward High diploma.  The Class of 2012 won over $580,000 in scholarships including full rides and major grants to Harvard, Fresno State, Holy Names University, Dominican University and Santa Clara University . 7 Hayward Community members from Eden Church along with student and parent leaders work together to decrease violence by focusing on youth and parent engagement.  The group has been actively working towards creating an on-site health clinic that would benefit HHS students and families.

Senior Athletes, Men's Soccer and Men's Track 'n Field set records as Senior athletes receive full-ride scholarships to Fresno State and Holy Names University and the men's soccer and track 'n field teams take first place in the HAAL for the first time in many years.


9 Measure G passes and brings in 2 million dollars a year for the next 5 years for all HUSD schools. Read more about Measure G.  This is the second measure in a row approved by voters in support of Hayward schools.  Measure I, passed in 2008, is almost complete with the opening of 4 new elementary schools and 1 middle school this coming year.   Future bond measures, if passed by Hayward voters, will include the construction and modernization of a new Hayward High school.
10 Educator of the Year Awards bestowed upon outstanding HHS teachers Peggy Hearne and Mary Walsh.  Ms. Hearne was recognized by the Hayward Area Historical Society for her dedication, innovation and outstanding ability to connect students with history.  Ms. Walsh was honored as a Region IV Outstanding Educator by the California League of High Schools.

1 Biggest API Increase in District HHS achieves the biggest API increase in District, a jump of 49 points from 2009 to 2010 Academic Performance Index (API), meeting growth targets schoolwide and in subgroups.
2 Gates Millennium Scholar receives full ride to UCLA and graduate school Irmary Garcia wins the highly-coveted Gates Scholarship which will pay for all college expenses including graduate school, starting with UCLA where Irmary will be attending this Fall.
3 WASC The visiting WASC committee rewards HHS with the maximum 6-year accreditation.
4 NCS Champion receives full ride to Cal Jonte Grant, NCS champion in triple jump, reaches CIF State Championships in 3 events, the long jump, triple jump and high jump, earning himself a full athletic scholarship to UC Berkeley as an accomplished student-athlete.

6 Valedictorian Achieves Perfection Fiona Greer, Class of 2011 Valedictorian, graduates with a  4.19 GPA, earning nothing but A's in all classes, including Honors & AP
7 College Going Rate Increases The Percent of HHS Graduates Enrolled in College Increases 7 percentage points from 49% to 56% between 2005 and 2011.
8 Exceptional Art Achievement Alise Smith wins the Ken Cook Memorial Scholarship and is honored by Congresswoman Barbara Lee at the annual Congressional High School Art Competition.
9 "Challenge Day" builds Community Principal George Bullis and Teacher Jill Barbosa debut the first "Challenge Day," a life-changing, group experience that breaks down judgments and barriers while building school community.
10 Retirees Honored for Service HHS honors 16 retirees and their 134+ years of combined service to our school community.
